Based on a 2009 consensus, approximately 70% of the country’s population identifies as practicing Muslims. Islam plays a significant role in the Kazakh culture, including in politics. Less than 25% of the population identifies as Russian Orthodox. Other practicing Christian groups in the area include Roman Catholics and Protestants. In Kazakhstan, there are a total of 265 registered Orthodox churches, 93 Catholic churches, and 543 Protestant churches and prayer houses. The Russian Orthodox Christian Christmas is a recognized national holiday in Kazakhstan. Other religious groups in the area include Judaism, the Baha'i Faith, Hare Krishnas, Buddhists, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although Kazakhstan is a free religion country, beliefs outside of Islam are closely monitored.
